What is an Industrial Safety Inspection?
What does the term Safety Inspection mean?
Customers always ask ‘What is a Safety Inspection?’ when they see Black Country Safety Inspections, so here is a blog to explain.
Failure to have Safety Inspections can lead to injury and death in the workplace and potential Prosecution and Prison sentences for those liable.
Requirements laid down in various Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulations and guidance documents. Whilst there are hundreds of documents published by the HSE, Black Country Safety Inspections specialise in conducting Engineering Inspections. In our case the term ‘safety inspections’ is used to describe inspections, where if they did not take place, there could be a danger to employees’ safety.
In the HSE regulations, it dictates certain types of plant and equipment that require statutory inspection. Below shows 3 Regulations that are relevant to Engineering Inspections and the snippet from the Regulation that says Statutory Inspection are required;
1. LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations)
Regulation 9
(3) Subject to paragraph (6), every employer shall ensure that lifting equipment which is exposed to conditions causing deterioration which is liable to result in dangerous situations is — (a) thoroughly examined

Written scheme of examination (1) The user of an installed system and owner of a mobile system shall not operate the system or allow it to be operated unless he has a written scheme for the periodic examination, by a competent person

Examination in accordance with the written scheme (1) Subject to paragraph (7), the user of an installed system and the owner of a mobile system shall— (a) ensure that those parts of the pressure system included in the scheme of examination are examined by a competent person within the intervals specified in the scheme

(2) Where engineering controls are provided to meet the requirements of regulation 7, the employer shall ensure that thorough examination and testing of those controls is carried out – (a) in the case of local exhaust ventilation plant, at least once every 14 months

The snippets of the regulations are only part of what is required, however, enough to understand the requirement to have the relevant inspections conducted to stay compliant. This also will ensure any dangerous defects are highlighted and addressed before they fail, potentially causing injury.
